Classroom Rules for Band
No food, beverages, or gum allowed in the band room.
Treat others with respect and consideration.
Take proper care of equipment and music including pencils and music stands.
Return instruments and music to their proper places.
You must be on stage when the final bell rings or you will need to get a pass from where you came.
You will have two minutes after this to get ready and take your place.
When I ask you to be quiet please do so.
You are expected to put forth your best effort at every rehearsal. If you are having a problem that keeps you from doing so, please let me know at the beginning of class.
We are here to become better musicians.
We are also here to have fun but not at the expense of others.
Any infraction of these rules will receive a verbal warning followed by a detention.
Daily Assignment
There is one daily assignment for everyone.
Put your instruments, equipment and music in their proper places.
Failure to do so will result in a two point deduction from your grade.
Graduation
You are expected to perform at the Graduation Ceremonies. It is considered a Concert Performance. If you have a family conflict or illness you will be excused. Work is not an excuse. I need to have a note from your parents beforehand or if it was an emergency on the next school day.
Pep Band
You are expected to play at all the games when Pep Band plays. This constitutes one Volleyball game, 6 Boy’s Basketball and 6 Girl’s Basketball games plus the playoffs. If you have a game (Junior High), naturally, you won’t be there to play. If you play JV, you are expected to come and play for your Varsity Team. If for any other reason, you can’t come, I need to know the day of the game. You will not be penalized if I know beforehand. However, if you don’t show up and don’t communicate with me, it may effect your grade.
Parades
You are expected to march in the Memorial Day Parade unless you are a Senior. If you can’t, I need to have a note from your parents beforehand. If you don’t it will effect your grade. Please remember all that those who have fallen gave up for your country. Two hours is little sacrifice in comparison.
You are also expected to march in the Gilmanton Fair Parade unless you are in the Miss Gilmanton Pageant. We are one of the first units, so if you are part of another unit, you will have time to run back to it. Make sure to have someone take care of your instrument. If you can’t make the parade you are expected to let me know ahead of time. If you don’t it may seriously effect your place in the band the next year.
Grading Policy for Band
Grades for each quarter in Band are based on an average of points received in different categories
Attitude and Effort 30 points
Daily Attendance 45 points
Concert Attendance 30 points each performance (this does not pertain to Pep Band)
Parent Signature Form 10 points
There will also be extra points (not extra credit) given for Honors Band and Solo & Ensemble.
If you are tardy or absent you will not receive a point for that day. If it is an unexcused tardy 2 points will be deducted. If it is an unexcused absence 5 points may be deducted.
Acceptable excuses for a missed concert are: Illness and family emergency. I must have a written note signed by your parent or guardian stating the reason you missed a performance by the next day you are in school in order for the absence to be considered excused.
If you do miss a performance and it is an excused absence, you will still be required to write a 1,000 word research paper, with bibliography, on an aspect of music agreed upon by both the student and the instructor. This will be due no later than 10 school days after the date of the missed performance and will be graded like any other research paper (spelling, punctuation, etc.).
Grades are cumulative for each semester.
Concert Dress
You are expected to provide your own attire for certain concerts during the year. If you are having a problem obtaining these items, please talk to Mr. Seitz immediately. If you have clothes from previous years make sure they still fit. In other words, don’t wait to try them on the night before a Concert. Concert dress will be required at the following programs: Fall Concert, Veteran’s Day, Christmas, Large Group Clinic and Memorial Day. Concert dress is as follows:
Men: All white button down dress shirt with collar, tie, black pants, dark shoes.
Women: All WHITE shirt or blouse with sleeves, black pants or skirt, dark shoes. Modest length and neckline, please.
