The School District of Gilmanton is conscious of the tremendous change that has been, and is taking place in our society.  We believe that the public schools play an important role in influencing and directing our society, provided that the school board, administration, teachers, and support staff of our school district remain conscious of the problems that our society is facing and competently address these issues.

THE MISSION OF THE GILMANTON SCHOOL DISTRICT IS TO PROVIDE AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM THAT WILL ENABLE STUDENTS; REGARDLESS OF THEIR RACE, GENDER, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, ECONOMIC STATUS, HANDICAP, TALENTS, ABILITIES, OR DISABILITIES TO:

Develop to their fullest potential, in their own style, and to their own limitations.  Each is worthy of respect as a human being.  We must prepare all young people, whatever their talents, or limits, to strive for individual fulfillment through a sense of pride and accomplishment in oneself, others, and society, to nurture freedom and develop rational and critical thinking skills to assist in being a responsible citizen who understands the various individual and group roles in our complex society.

Be prepared to enter the job market and be productive members of society.  The District will provide career information, identify new requisite skills, and provide basic skills training to assist students in making decisions regarding future employment.  Upon successful completion of the District’s graduation requirements, the student will be exposed to and given the opportunity to develop the necessary skills to enter entry level positions, begin specialized vocational training, or enter college; and be exposed to the realization that adaptation may be necessary for employment due to technological advances.

Develop the desire and techniques to learn, know, reason, solve, and evaluate.  Students, as lifelong learners, should be encouraged to study independently, think logically and creatively, and communicate ideas meaningfully.  Students then may appreciate the arts, understand various cultures, and relate positively to various interpersonal and interracial relationships.  Such awareness, habits, and skills will assist them in accepting a realistic evaluation of themselves, their ambitions, and their role in the environment and the world.

Develop as informed citizens concerned with their civic responsibilities and the well-being of our community, our nation, and the world.  A free society is characterized by a citizenry which is knowledgeable and participatory in its governmental, legal, economic, and political systems.

Work in a positive atmosphere:  one that promotes mutual respect and trust between peers, students, and staff, as well as the values of fairness and tolerance; and one that promotes a realization within students that while much is expected of them, the expectations are realistic and reasonable and should not cause undo stress or anxiety.
